1996 – Present:
Radio & Communications
After receiving “Broadcaster of the Year” awards upon graduating from Radio & TV Arts at Beal Secondary School in London (graduated with honours) and from the Radio Broadcasting program at Fanshawe College in London, Kevin entered radio as an on-air announcer for the Blackburn Radio group in Sarnia, Ontario.
Kevin worked on-air for 1110 AM CKTY (Country music), 99.9 “The Fox FM” (Adult Contemporary) and, eventually, 1070 AM CHOK (news/talk).
After a year of mostly part-time on-air duties, Kevin began to grow interested in other aspects of the business, and in 1998, he became a member of the CKTY sales and promotion team while maintaining some part-time on-air presence.
Later that year, Kevin took on the challenge of “Sales Team Co-Ordinator” for CKTY. With that role, he was responsible for setting budgets, managing staff and reporting directly to the Sales Manager.
During that time in his career, Kevin was integral at creating new and fun sales-driven promotions such as the “Strait to the Silverdome” campaign (built around promotion of a George Strait concert in Michigan) and “Five O’Clock Fridays” (an interactive end-of-the week package received well by both listeners and sponsors).
Kevin also co-created, produced, sold and co-hosted “The Pit Crew” show on CKTY (later moving to CHOK), a weekly talk show dedicated to regional auto racing. The show sold out early in its first season, attracting additional advertisers to the radio stations, creating and strengthening some new accounts that are still going strong today. Along with co-host Mike Kilbreath and producer Shane Roberts, Kevin hosted the show for four seasons before leaving radio as a career. “The Pit Crew” carried on as a viable part of the radio station’s lineup for several years with Jeff Atkinson taking over for Kevin.
Ironically, “The Pit Crew” and the experience of producing, selling and hosting it foreshadowed Kevin’s interest in other business models of a similar vein. It also peaked Kevin’s interest in the business of auto racing, which would also become a vital part of Kevin’s career.
Kevin slowly worked his way back onto the air full-time, hosting the afternoon drive show on CHOK for almost two years and eventually landing in the much-sought-after role, morning show host on the same station.
Years later, after having left radio to pursue a sales, marketing and business career, Kevin was asked to sit in as a guest host of “London in the Afternoon” on 1290 CJBK in the summer of 2006. The show, hosted regularly by Kevin’s friend Mike Stubbs (who is also the play-by-play voice of the OHL’s London Knights), was a mix of talk, interviews, trivia, sports and other fun. Kevin immediately felt at home.
In 2007, Kevin hosted Mike Stubbs’ show a few more times. He also filled in as host on “The Shauna Rae Show” and sat in for the venerable Pete James, delivering the morning sports report on CJBK.
In January of 2007, he began hosting the weekend afternoon show on Country Favourites, BX 93 (92.7) in London, a role he has maintained and still enjoys today.

1998 – 2007:
Auto Racing
How does a guy who grew up dreaming of being a baseball play-by-play announcer find himself working in a management role in the business of auto racing?
“People,” Kevin explained. “I instantly fell in love with the community and the heart of the people I got to know. And I became fascinated the business side of it too. ”
After getting a taste of racing through his initial involvement with “The Pit Crew” show at CKTY Radio in Sarnia, Kevin was asked to try announcing a race at Delaware Speedway, a half-mile asphalt stock-car track about 15 minutes from his home in London. He announced his first race in the fall of 1998 and went on to serve as lead PA announcer until taking over as General Manager in 2005.
The more evenings and weekends Kevin spent around the race track, the more interested and involved he became in the business part of it. Piece-by-piece, he became more involved in writing media releases, updating content for the track’s website and assisting with promotional and marketing campaigns.
In August of 2001, Kevin was offered the full-time role as Director of Sales and Marketing at Delaware Speedway, which he accepted. In addition to maintaining his track announcing and public relations writing, Kevin took on a number of other responsibilities, including the following:
-
Maintained and grew extensive corporate account list
-
Created, executed and reported on promotions, business partnerships, event nights, billboard signage, corporate hospitality, group outings
-
Created and implemented marketing strategy including radio, television, print, public events and promotions and business-to-business marketing partnerships
-
Created and administered community support fundraisers such as the “Cash Car” for the Children’s Health Foundation and “Signature Truck” for Thames Valley Children’s Centre. Combined projects have helped raise over $22,000.00 for various community groups.
In September of 2004, Kevin was promoted to General Manager at Delaware Speedway. In that time, his typical activities included the following:
- Budgeted and managed all aspects of the business
- Developed and initiated company business plan and strategy
- Maintained all sales and marketing activity
- Reported directly to ownership group and landlord
- Responsible for hiring, coaching, counselling event-night staff of over 60 – 100+ people (depending on the event)
- Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of stock car racing facility
- Spearheaded and implemented several ground-breaking initiatives that are still in place, including new event formats, updated rules packages, co-operative efforts with other race tracks and open communication between the race track officials and the competitors
After Kevin’s first season as General Manager, Delaware Speedway received nomination for “Business of the Year” by the London Chamber of Commerce. Though they didn’t win, the nomination meant a lot to Kevin.
“That was very gratifying, receiving that acknowledgement from the business community,” Kevin said. “I attended the awards with Dave Meldrum, one of the four owners of the business, and I think we both felt very proud that day. I know I did.”
In his time at Delaware Speedway, Kevin expanded his knowledge and experience of business in ways he’d never imagined. The challenges associated with the business of local stock-car racing – at least in the mould Kevin wanted to follow -- were a lot to manage, but they helped prepare him for his next challenge.
In January of 2007, Kevin resigned from the General Manager’s role.
“It was time for a change,” said Kevin. “We had run very hard and had a lot of success. I have nothing but great memories of the terrific fun and wonderful experiences I had in that role. And I am completely grateful to the people who hired me for giving me the opportunity. I wish them nothing but continued success.”
