OVERVIEW
A member of SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) since 2000, Kevin has been writing songs in earnest since the early 1990’s and performing for the same amount of time. In that time, Kevin has both written and performed songs of various different genres that translate well into all types of environments, from full-tilt rock and roll to acoustic offerings appropriate for a more intimate environment.
Kevin began his musical career first by writing only lyrics. Shortly afterwards, he began vocal training and later endeavoured to learn to play guitar. His body of work over the last decade and a half amasses almost 300 original compositions.
Here’s a look at Kevin’s musical history:

Early 1990's: "Innocent Bystander"
Born when Kevin happened across Kevin Claxton, a multi-instrumentalist who shared much the same musical tastes, Innocent Bystander was Kevin’s first band. He sang lead and co-wrote all the original songs for the group, which had a brief but productive run of rock and roll in the early 1990’s. Innocent Bystander was made up of Kevin (lead vocals), Kevin Claxton (guitar and vocals), Mike Hessel (bass and vocals) and Aaron Ramsay (drums). Some highlights:
- Recorded a 5-song demo tape called “Forget About Tomorrow” (sold every copy!)
- Won Beal Secondary School’s “Battle of the Bands”
- Represented London and the “Stay Clear Festival” and performed in Toronto
- Played festival at Victoria Park in London, opening for the Doug Varty Band
- Performed at Canada Day Festival at White Oaks Park in London, where Kevin also performed the National Anthem
- Wrote and performed many original songs including “What’s Up Doc,” “Angel,” “Hypnotized by the Bone,” “Miami Heat,” “Forget About Tomorrow,” “Nasty Girl,” “Confidence Dies” and “Election Day.”

Ultimately, the band went its separate ways as each member graduated from high school and went on to various post-secondary pursuits. |

Late 1990's : The "Riverband"
Kevin’s stint as rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist with the Sarnia-based Riverband actually started with an impromptu performance at Sarnia’s Sports and Entertainment Centre. Kevin was invited to appear on stage at a big event and sing one song: “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks. Though Kevin was invited more as a publicity stunt for his current radio on-air position than his ability to sing, his performance caught many people’s attention.

Having just changed their name (the band had been known as the “Whiskey River Band” and had recorded a regionally successful country CD), the group approached Kevin about coming on board as a songwriter, rhythm guitar player and backup vocalist. On the premise that the group was intent on recording a new pop/rock original CD, Kevin agreed. He quickly learned the band’s catalogue of cover material and set out on writing new songs, one of which was later performed on live TV.
Months later, little interest had been shown by the band in pursuing original music. “I had an absolute blast with those guys but I didn’t get the impression they really wanted to break from their formula of performing popular cover songs, and I suppose I can understand why, looking at the success they’d had with that,” Kevin reflected. “But that’s not why I was there. So I wished the guys the best and moved on.”
Some of the original songs Kevin wrote at that time included, “Drinkin’ Tequila,” “And the River,” “Freedom,” “Sunken Soldier” and several more.
The Riverband was made up of Sean Robbins (lead vocals), Dave Cook (lead guitar and vocals), Dave Chaulk (bass and vocals), Randy Wilson (drums) and Kevin (rhythm guitar and vocals).
Some highlights:
- Headlined Canada Day Festival in Centennial Park in Sarnia in 1999.
- Performed throughout Lambton County and parts of Kent County in Ontario
- Performed Kevin’s original song “Sunken Soldier” live on CFPL TV in London

2000: "Freight Train"
On the heels of Kevin’s experience with the Riverband, Kevin put together the three-piece outfit he called Freight Train for one reason: “I’d been told you couldn’t go into a bar and perform original music and get away with it. So, I decided to go out and do exactly that.”
Reuniting with friend Kevin Claxton (previously the guitar player in Innocent Bystander) and convincing another friend, Aaron Zimmer, to play bass, Freight Train was born.

For the gig, a four-night run at the Sarnia club Dallas City Limits, Kevin played guitar and sang lead vocals while Aaron Zimmer played bass and Kevin Claxton handled all percussion. Lead vocals were shared between all three members of the group.
“The first night was a little rough, I’ll admit,” Kevin remembers with a chuckle. “But once we got our feet underneath it, we cooked up it real nice. And yes, people danced to the original songs and even sang along with a couple by the third night. In fact, every now and then, I still get asked if Freight Train is ever going to do another gig.”
Some of Kevin’s original songs performed by Freight Train included: “Freedom,” “Drinkin’ Tequila,” “And the River,” “Oughta Be a Law,” “Plan Comes Together,” “Listen to the Tracks,” “Hello Kettle,” “Bullfighter’s Enemy,” “Don’t Apologize,” “See You Later,” “Overdrive” and “Lame Brain.”
Some highlights:
- Interviewed and performed “Freedom” on the Cogeco TV show Harada and Friends
- Performed “Freedom” live on 99.9 the Fox FM in Sarnia
- Four-night run at Dallas City Limits in Sarnia

2001: Celebration of Lights & Solo Acoustic
One of the biggest events in the Sarnia-Lambton community is the annual Christmas time light display, the “Celebration of Lights”. In the summer of the 2000, the event organizers approached Kevin about writing and recording a new theme song. The result was “Light It Up” which Kevin recorded with Mark O’Reilly of Sarnia.

The song received significant airplay on CHOK Radio in Sarnia that holiday season. Kevin also performed the song, along with “Freedom” at the official opening ceremonies at the Dow People Place in Sarnia(old friend Kevin Claxton joined him for lead guitar and harmony vocals).
“That was a challenge,” said Kevin of performing at the Celebration of Lights ceremony. “The temperature was well below freezing that night, and it was tough to play a guitar with bare fingers in that kind of weather. But we did it, and I’m glad we did; it was a lot of fun.”

Kevin also produced and performed a solo acoustic concert designed as a fundraiser for the Celebration of Lights, a non-profit group. Sadly, a snowstorm wiped out the original date, a pre-Christmas evening in December. The event was rescheduled and later performed in mid-January.
At that concert, Kevin performed solo, with just an acoustic guitar and harmonica. Among the original songs he performed were “Light It Up,” “Freedom,” “Don’t Apologize,” “Serve to Cry,” “One More Run,” “Anyone Anywhere,” “Emperor’s Recruits” and “In Over Your Head.”

2007: "I Remember" CD
Over a six-year period from 2001 through 2006, Kevin was mostly inactive as a performer, due mostly to the incredible time commitments he took on in his professional career. Coupled with that, Kevin’s two sons were born; Eddie in 2003 and Jaden in 2006. Though Kevin kept writing songs of all types, he played live very seldom.
That all changed early in 2007 when Kevin took on a project in honour of his grandfather, Murray Newkirk, writing and recording three songs in support of the Wallaceburg Anitque Motor and Boat Outing (WAMBO) and the town of Wallaceburg in general.
“Wallaceburg is my family’s home town, and it was everything to my Grandpa Newkirk,” said Kevin. “He loved watching the boat traffic on waterways like the Sydenham, Snye and St. Clair Rivers. The weekend of WAMBO, when the old wooden boats come back and downtown comes alive again, was an event in which he took great pride. So I decided to do something, largely on his behalf, to support it.”
|
|
In February of 2007, Kevin brought to Wallaceburg a song he’d written years earlier. He played it for WAMBO Chairman Chip Gordon and town historian and author, Alan Mann. They instantly encouraged Kevin to continue with the project.
 |
Kevin soon wrote the songs “I Remember” and “Glass” and began the process of trying to get them on CD. To help out, he called his old friend from the Riverband, Dave Cook, and began working with London-based producer, Kevin Gorman.
In June of 2007, the “I Remember” CD was recorded at KG Productions in London. It was released in July of 2007. |
In addition to the three songs on the CD, Kevin once again mixed in his own songs for many of the subsequent performances to support the disc, including “Everything’s Just Fine,” “Orlando,” “Bagley Avenue,” “Benjamin Briggs,” “No Schedule Man” and “Back to Buena Vista.”
Some highlights of that time:
- Performed at Wallaceburg & District Museum new “Glass Gallery” exhibit opening ceremonies
- Performed at Wallaceburg Chamber of Commerce annual summer party
- Performed at CPT Entertainment Inc. business launch / CD release party on the Macassa Bay Boat in Sarnia
- Interviewed on CFCO Radio in Chatham

2008 and beyond …
After the show at Aeolian Hall in November of 2007, Kevin needed to set his musical pursuits aside as he spent all his time developing a new trade show with his new company, CPT Entertainment Inc. After that show (the CPT Racing Experience) was completed, Kevin began working at the music again, preparing for the upcoming summer and beyond.
“I’ve actually had to turn down some shows for a variety of reasons,” Kevin said. “The ‘I Remember’ project happened so quickly that I needed to take some time to get back set and lay a foundation I can build on slowly but more consistently going forward.”
Kevin has worked up solo arrangements of many of his songs and has also begun rehearsing with Kevin Gorman, who produced the “I Remember” CD.
“Working with Kevin Gorman gives the songs a totally new feel,” Kevin said. “Because he can add piano or other keyboard parts, percussion and tenor vocal harmony, it gives us a lot of versatility. Ultimately, we’d like to add a rhythm so we can go out as a band when the occasion calls for it. That’ll come along soon enough.”
As for more recordings, Kevin hopes and expects to do more but is in no immediate rush. For now his aim is to keep playing and work toward the next project.
“I’ve got piles of songs in a couple of different formats I’d love to do,” Kevin said. “Right now though, we’ll continue to play in support of ‘I Remember’ and see what develops as we go along.”
